Slack
Summer 2019, Summer 2020, Fall 2021 to Now
Between my two internships and my current full-time role at Slack, I’ve been lucky enough to meet co-workers I can call my friends, be part of a historic IPO, and put a meaningful mark on a couple of pretty cool Slack features. Here are some things I’ve worked on, big and small, that I’m proud of.
Widgets
Spearheaded the development and launch of the first ever widgets for Slack: a Catch Up widget to go straight to triaging, a Status widget to set and clear your status straight from your homescreen, and a Slack launcher to jump into Slack from your lockscreen. Leveraged interactive widgets to allow users to take actions directly from the widget and used animations to clearly indicating states changing.
Recap
Wearing my Design Engineer hat, I joined the AI team at Slack and helped elevate the craft of the Recap experience on mobile. I worked on various details such as smoothly transitioning the header divider into a progress bar, a fluid expand and collapse interaction for topics, a progressive “marked read” animation in the card footer and a cute emoji shower easter egg at the very bottom.
Catch Up
Information overload is a huge problem on Slack and the list-based channel list on mobile doesn’t work great for triaging. With a small and talented team, we made a prototype of Catch Up for Slack Day (a company-wide hackathon) and given the buzz internally, decided to productionize it and ship it to the world. The premise is simple: swipe right to mark a conversation as read and swipe left to leave it as unread. It turns out that the Tinder-inspired swiping UX works just as well for work messages as it does for clothes. It was so much fun playing a major role in the over year-long journey of this feature.
Pull to Smile :)
Thought of and led the design and development of a cute easter egg in Slack. If you pull down the header far enough, we reveal a fun little message for you. Try it out and see for yourself.
Search Tab Pill Animation
Designed and developed a fluid pill which slides under tabs as user swipes between different pages in the new, unified search experience
Sales Elevate Rocket Pull to Refresh
Created a fun, pull to refresh for Slack’s Sales Elevate experience with an animated rocket and dynamic haptics
Status Cap
Easily take a peek at your status while on the go with a beautiful progressive animation to reveal and hide the status
Huddles for iPad
Led the development of a new, immersive, full-screen iPad experience for Huddles with video, thread and captions side-by-side, reactions, backgrounds, and lots of small design details sprinkled in the experience through gestures and micro-interactions
Huddles for iPhone
Completely revamped the mobile huddles experience with a a new look and new features to make it the best way to collaborate with your teammates on the go
Drag and Drop for iPad
Designed and implemented native drag and drop to be able to drag in any type of file into Slack
Custom Emoji Upload
Whether it’s a funny photo of your teammate or a logo for a new feature, added the ability to upload any image as a custom emoji straight from your phone
Context Menus Previews
Added long-press menu to easily access quick actions on the Slack home-screen and get a quick preview of messages in the channel.
